Free haircuts

At 224 Youth Zone, we believe in creating opportunities that help young people feel confident, valued and supported. This week, we were proud to welcome more than 200 children and young people to a free haircut, braiding and styling event, delivered in partnership with Operation Community Hamper.

The event brought together 10 professional barbers, hairdressers and stylists who generously volunteered their time, skills and expertise to provide free haircuts and styling services ahead of the new school term.

From fresh fades and shape-ups to intricate braids and complete style transformations, the impact of the day could be seen far beyond the hairstyles themselves. For many young people, a fresh cut brought a boost in confidence, self-esteem and pride.

Throughout the day, the atmosphere was warm, welcoming and full of community spirit. Families waited patiently, young people encouraged one another, and volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure everyone felt welcome. While demand meant there were long queues at times, there was also laughter, kindness and a real sense of togetherness that made the day so special.

“What an incredible day. More than 200 children and young people had their hair cut, shaped, braided and styled, and it was wonderful to see the smiles and confidence that came with every new look. There were long waits at times, but there was also laughter, patience, encouragement and an overwhelming sense of togetherness.”

“We are so grateful for the time, talent and commitment they gave to our young people. Their generosity ensured that hundreds of children and young people left feeling valued, confident and ready for the weeks ahead.”

Matt Justice, CEO, 224 Youth Zone

“As a charity that specialises in addressing food poverty, this was a new venture for us. We are beyond proud that so many people volunteered to support the session. Without their skills, generosity and commitment, we would not have seen so many happy faces leaving 224 Youth Zone. Not only did children leave with a fresh new hairstyle, but parents also left without the worry of how they were going to afford haircuts or braiding during what can be a very challenging time financially.”

Beyond the free haircuts, the event showed how 224 Youth Zone is becoming a beating heart of the south Bristol community. Every week, more people are coming through our doors, not just to access activities and support, but to connect with one another, build relationships and be part of something positive. Seeing hundreds of young people, families, volunteers and professionals come together under one roof was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.

Events like this demonstrate the power of partnership and community action. By bringing together local charities, professionals, volunteers and families, we can remove barriers, support household finances and create opportunities that enable young people to thrive.

For many young people, a haircut is about far more than appearance. It is about confidence, dignity, belonging and knowing that their community cares. Seeing over 200 young people leave with renewed confidence was a powerful reminder of the difference that can be made when people come together with a shared purpose.

We would like to thank Operation Community Hamper, every stylist, team member, volunteer, supporter, family member and young person who helped make the day such an incredible success.

This wasn’t just about hair. It was about confidence, connection, kindness and community.

200+ young people. 10 amazing stylists. One unforgettable day.
